 Airing Dirty Laundry

Some families are taught not to “air dirty laundry” - particularly to the public, friends, other family members or any living soul.  What can result from this is an inability or refusal for families to discuss the elephant in the room or family secrets. What then results is a whole lot of toxic air that one attempts to sweep under the rug. (Have you ever tried to capture air in your hands or with your arms? Extremely impossible!!) What happens next is that all the toxic air seeps out from underneath the rug! We, then, knowingly or unknowingly breathe it in!!! Further, even though one may have tried to get rid of the toxic air or ignore it’s presence, it still affects your being.

What can one do to decrease the effects of this toxic air?

·        Know that the dirty laundry within your family does not have to weigh negatively on your current life or predict doom for your future.
·        Reach out to a therapist who can help you build a filter for that toxic air and provide you space to air that dirty laundry.

It is time to ask yourself - how much dirty laundry can you bear?
